  • First 5 California DLL Pilot Study

    The First 5 California-funded Dual Language Learner Pilot Study sought to identify the range and distribution of learning experiences for DLLs in California and to better understand how these experiences are linked to positive child and family outcomes. Specific goals of this study are to:

    1. Determine what are effective and feasible practices for DLLs in early learning and care settings, across three content areas: instructional practices, professional development, and family engagement.

    2. Disseminate findings about best practices to relevant stakeholders and practitioners.

  • Using ELSF Guidelines to Improve Instructional Materials for English Learners

    ELSF partnered with over 60 English learner experts from across the U.S. that represent a variety of perspectives across K-12 organizations. This partnership has worked to develop research-based guidelines in English language arts (ELA) and math to support educators in developing and adapting instructional materials to be more inclusive of K-12 students learning English. The Guidelines provide key focus areas for educators as they work to create a more linguistically responsive curriculum across units and lessons in support of multilingual learners.

  • Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten Toolkit for English Learner Roadmap Implementation - Californians Together

    The toolkit supports the implementation of the California English Learner Roadmap policy as a framework to guide practice in preschools/TK classrooms across the California.

  • Empowering Emerging Bilinguals: Policy and Leadership Recommendations from a Community of Practice

    From 2021-2024, Education First coordinated a community of practice for districts and counties focused on high-quality instructional practices for young multilingual learners.

    This report summarizes the overall effort, captures lessons learned, and offers recommendations for policymakers and education system leaders.

  • High Quality Multilingual Learning Grant Program: Final Learning and Evaluation Report

    Engage R+D partnered with the EBC to conduct a formative evaluation of the High Quality Instructional Practices Community of Practice. This report provides insights into how educators, leaders, and systems can deliver sustainable, high-quality educational experiences for multilingual learners from PreK-3rd grade.

  • Preparing the UPK Workforce Centered onMultilingual Learners in the Central Valley: Institutions of Higher Education Capacity Study

    This study analyzes data and information from 20 institutions of higher education (IHEs) serving the EL-WIN region in the Central Valley to better understand their capacity to prepare the UPK workforce in ways that center multilingual learners.

  • A Case Study for Materials Adoption in San Leandro, CA

    This case study explores how San Leandro Unified began its own materials review process for its high school math curriculum in 2021-22. They wanted to better understand how to identify and prioritize high-quality instructional materials to truly support multilingual learners.

  • DLL Community of Practice Reflections

    The DLL Community of Practice (CoP) was designed to help First 5 California (F5CA) and its partners understand what it takes to implement effective DLL practices to scale and sustain them statewide. The DLL Pilot study was funded by F5CA. The Pilot CoP was implemented in partnership with American Institutes for Research, Advancement Project California, Early Edge California, and the California Department of Education Opportunities for All Division. CoPs were facilitated by the Glen Price Group (GPG).

Teach Plus analyzed the experiences and reflections of educators who have been leading site-based efforts to implement the English Learner Roadmap to delineate the strategic interventions and systemic reforms required to ensure that the English Learner Roadmap’s comprehensive guidelines are fully operationalized across California’s educational landscape.
